Abstract
Energy final use is increasingly considered as a crucial element of the economic costs and environmental impacts, since the occupants' behaviour influences approximately half of the total amount of energy used in buildings. In front of the pressing necessity of lifestyles compatible with optimal resources consumption, a crucial issue is the ability to observe, track and comprehend occupants' individual and collective behaviours to reach their indoor environmental well-being. This crucial approach is difficult to apply in terms of design, because energy optimization and the life cycle of buildings involve the unpredictability of the human being when interacts with technical, environmental and social systems. The Ergonomics/Human Factors (HF/E) discipline provides a methodological appro- ach and operational tools for the observation and effective design of humans-systems-environment interactions for building energy sustainability.
