Abstract

The entire refrigeration system of a supermarket, i.e. the refrigerated display cabinets and cold rooms and the Commercial Refrigeration Unit in various configurations, have been modelled in TRNSYS with in-house types for all components. Taking advantage of data from monitoring a fully instrumented CO2 trans-critical booster system in operation in a small size supermarket in northern Italy, the model has been validated in the configuration with parallel compression and full integration with the HVAC system. Heat recovery is performed in favour of heating and hot water production, while cooling capacity is provided for water chilling purposes in favour of air conditioning. The validated model is a powerful tool, able to predict the annual performance at various configurations and to evaluate the effectiveness of the integration with DHW/HVAC systems at various levels. Measurements and simulations show that, at mild climate conditions, it is possible and effective to fully provide HVAC and refrigeration duties with a single all-in-one unit properly designed and operated.
