Abstract

In these days of tough debate on the closure of schools in Italy and worldwide, it is important to shed light on a critical aspect: the risk of aerosol contagion in schools and the link between "natural ventilation" and the lowering of such risk. Besides wearing face mask, to which extent can we further reduce the risk of contagion in classrooms by windows and doors opening as well as by mechanical ventilation? In this work, some risk reduction scenarios in high-schools are presented based on the one dimensional dynamic GN-model. The aim is to approximately quantify the effect of natural and mechanical ventilation in classrooms and to include it in a risk mitigation strategy. The findings show that for what concerns airborne transmission risk, a possible reprise of face-to-face lectures in high-schools is conditioned to a sufficient air ventilation level of classrooms, mandatory face mask for students and reduction of the number of students per classroom (also by alternating groups in presence).
