Abstract

Phase change materials (acronym PCM) are substances that can accumulate thermal energy during fusion, subtracting it from the environment and then releasing it when the temperature value decreases, during the solidification phase. PCMs can improve the summer performance of buildings with low thermal inertia and can increase winter performance directly when the accumulation of thermal energy during the day reduces the heating load in the night. In addition, PCMs have the function to limit external temperature peaks and to transpose them temporally, with the effect of damping internal temperature fluctuations, reducing the amplitude of the oscillation during the day. The applications in the building field are particularly interesting and can concern both opaque and transparent elements of building envelope. Current technology ensures phase change materials with high durability, conductivity and thermal diffusivity characteristics
