Abstract
This paper deals with the energy efficiency in the residential sector in small islands not connected to the National Electric Transmission Network. The analysis dealt with a typical user of the island of Lampedusa, identified on the basis of the ISTAT statistical data. Consumption data, acquired from the bill, and monitored electricity consumption were studied in order to select the most appropriate retrofit interventions such as the replacement of existing electric water heaters and the use of Building Automation Control system (BACs) for the lighting system control and flexible loads management. In order to evaluate the achievable savings, dynamic simulations were carried out. Results shown that the best results can be obtained by installing a solar thermal plant for the production of DHW (average monthly savings of 39%) and using BACs on the lighting system with the simultaneous replacement of lighting fixtures with LED (27%). It was also possible to verify how these retrofit actions also allow a reduction in the power peaks of the daily load diagram causing a positive impact for the power distribution grid and the electricity generation system, entirely based on diesel plants.
