Abstract

The building sector is experiencing a progressive energy transition towards its decarbonization, needed to achieve the ambitious target of 90% emissions reduction by 2050 defined by the European Commission. Next to the well-known definition of zero- energy building, the concept of zero-carbon building is taking hold, increasingly involving all building typologies, among which hotels, which are the main focus of the research. With the aim of investigating the possibility of achieving the ambitious zero-carbon targets for this building category, which energy and environmental impact is recognized, a reference hotel and diverse retrofit scenarios were simulated through EnergyPlus software, in two Italian cities, Milan and Bari. The work contributed to highlight the difficulty for the hotels under investigation in achieving the defined zero-carbon targets, proposing the main results in the form of energy and environmental metrics, tailored for the hotel category.
